Jeff Schultz of the Athletic reports that the Falcons and WR Julio Jones are not far apart on a new contract and a deal could be finalized in the next few weeks.
Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff told reporters on Thursday that they’re in talks with Jones but there’s no timeline for a deal right now.
Jones was not in attendance for the start of offseason workouts this week. However, the expectation is that Jones will show up for mandatory activities later this offseason as he and the Falcons work on a long-term extension.
Jones’ contract situation has been one of the most pressing issues for the Falcons this offseason, as he’s looking for a raise that would put him more in line with the top-of-the-market salaries being paid to other receivers around the league.
The Falcons adjusted Jones’ contract last year to pay him an additional $2.9 million in 2018 and included a $4.4 million signing bonus.
Jones, 30, is a former first-round pick of the Falcons back in 2011. He’s currently in the fifth year of his six-year, $81.432 million contract that includes $47 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $12.5 million for the 2018 season.
In 2018, Jones appeared in all 16 games for the Falcons and caught 113 passes for 1,677 yards receiving and eight touchdowns.
