Former Raiders Second-Round S Obi Melifonwu Clears Waivers, Now Free Agent

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that former Raiders S Obi Melifonwu officially passed through waivers unclaimed on Wednesday.

This, of course, means that Melifonwu is now free to sign with a team of his choosing.

Melifonwu, 24, was selected by the Raiders with the No. 56 overall pick. He’s in the second year of his four-year, $4.5 million contract and set to make base salaries of $669,972 and $824,944 over the next two years.

The Raiders placed Melifonwu on injured reserve coming out of the preseason last year while he was working his way back from knee surgery and later brought him back.

Melifonwu was waived with an injury designation during the preseason and later reverted to the Raiders’ injured reserve list before being cut loose on Tuesday.

In 2017, Melifonwu appeared in five games for the Raiders and recorded seven tackles and no interceptions or pass defenses.

During his four-year college career at Connecticut, Melifonwu recorded 349 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, 16 pass defenses, two fumble recoveries, and two forced fumble.
