Former Saints DE Will Smith Could Be An Option For The Seahawks

According to Albert Breer of the NFL Network, former Saints DE Will Smith could be an option for the Seattle Seahawks if they end up losing DE Michael Bennett during free agency.

Earlier in the day, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Bennett will test the free agent market next season, as a contract agreement is not expected to be reached in the days leading up to free agency.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network mentioned that if Bennett were to leave via free agency, Chris Clemons would likely be “safe” in Seattle.

However, the Seahawks already parted way with DE Red Bryant, so they could use some addtional depth at defensive end, even if Seattle keeps Clemens.

Smith, 32, sat out the 2013 season after having been placed on the injured reserve with a torn ACL that he suffered during the team’s third preseason game. It’s hard to say what kind of market he’ll have in the coming weeks, as veteran players who have been released in recent years haven’t fared that well in free agency.

With this is mind, it seems conceivable that Smith could settle for a one-year deal just above, or close to the veteran’s minimum.

The Patriots have also been mentioned as a potential option for Smith.
