Giants Expected To Hire Thomas McGaughey As Special Teams Coordinator

Alex Marvez of the Sporting News reports that the Giants are expected to hire former Panthers Thomas McGaughey special teams coordinator in the same role.

Sources have told Marvez that McGaughey was confident enough about getting the Giants’ job that he turned down special teams opportunities elsewhere.

McGaughey will replace Tom Quinn in New York.

Joe Person recently reported that McGaughey was expected to meet with the Giants about joining the staff in the coming days, so this doesn’t come as a big surprise. There are obvious ties to GM Dave Gettleman in New York from their time together with the Panthers.

The Panthers recently made the decision to promote assistant special teams coach Chase Blackburn to coordinator on Thursday, replacing McGaughey.

McGaughey was the Panthers’ assistant special teams coach before he replaced Bruce DeHaven as their special teams coordinator six months later.

According to Football Outsiders, the Panthers were the No. 6 special teams unit in 2017.
