Giants Re-Sign QB Alex Tanney, Waive RB Austin Walter

The New York Giants announced Friday that they’ve re-signed QB Alex Tanney and waived RB Austin Walter.

The Giants cut Tanney on Thursday and promoted Walker, so this was obviously just a temporary move to ensure they had depth at running back.

Tanney, 31, originally signed on with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Monmouth back in 2012. Since then, he’s had brief stints with the Cowboys, Browns, Buccaneers, Titans, Bills and Colts before being signed to the Titans’ active roster at end of the 2015 season.

Tanney spent time on the Titans’ practice squad before eventually being called up. However, the Titans elected to cut him loose last year and he later signed on with the Giants in May. Tanney re-signed in New York this offseason.

In 2015, Tanney appeared in one game for the Titans and completed 10 of 14 pass attempts for 99 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.

Walter, 23, wound up going undrafted out of Rice and signed with the 49ers following a tryout. San Francisco ended up waiving Walter during final roster cuts coming out of the preseason. He caught on with the Giants practice squad in September.

During his four-year college career at Rice, Walter rushed for 1,744 yards on 345 carries (5.1 YPC) to go along with 79 receptions for 803 yards receiving and 18 total touchdowns over the course of 49 games. He also totaled 1,548 kick return yards on 71 attempts.
