Jets Officially Release CB Trumaine Johnson With Post-June 1 Designation

Update:

The New York Jets announced Wednesday that they’ve released CB Trumaine Johnson with a post-June 1 designation.

This move basically spreads Johnson’s cap hit over two years, as opposed to taking the full impact right now. The downside, of course, is that New York won’t see the cap savings until June.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Johnson with the post-June 1 designation will free up $11 million of available cap space while creating $4 million in dead money.

According to Manish Mehta, the Jets have informed CB Trumaine Johnson they will be releasing him before the start of free agency.

This doesn’t come as a big surprise, as Johnson was benched last season despite being a major free-agent addition just two years ago.

Per Over The Cap, cutting Johnson clears $3 million in cap for the Jets while resulting in a $12 million dead cap charge.

Johnson, 30, is a former third-round pick of the Rams back in 2012. He played out his rookie contract with the Rams before being franchised in back-to-back seasons.

From there, Johnson agreed to a five-year, $72.5 million contract with $34 million fully guaranteed with the Jets back in 2018.

In 2019, Johnson appeared in seven games for the Jets and recorded 25 tackles, one interception and two pass defenses.
