Jets QB Sam Darnold Out For Week 2 With Mono, Could Miss Multiple Games

The Jets announced that QB Sam Darnold would miss Monday night’s game against the Browns due to mono, per Brian Costello.

The team said Darnold could potentially miss several weeks depending on how long he is ill. Jets HC Adam Gase said he was happy the team had its bye in Week 4, suggesting Darnold could potentially return Week 5 against the Eagles, according to Ralph Vacchiano

Darnold was sent home from the team facility yesterday with the contagious illness and did not practice. Chris Mortensen reports that Darnold will be “quarantined” at his apartment until Jets’ medical staff feels it’s safe to expose him to rest of team. He has reportedly already lost five lbs.

Jets backup QB Trevor Siemian will get the start in Darnold’s place for as long as he’s out.

Darnold, 22, was taken with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Jets. He agreed to a four-year, $30,370,490 contract with the Jets that includes a $20,167,628 signing bonus.

The contract will also include a fifth-year option for the Jets to pick up in 2021.

In 2018, Darnold appeared in 13 games for the Jets and completed 57.7 percent of his passes for 2.865 yards to go along with 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He also rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown.
