According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the way in which Raiders HC Jon Gruden evaluates personnel and the people he speaks to about personnel moves has led to a disconnect in the organization.
Rapoport says that Gruden’s style of evaluation is forcing many in the Raiders to try to adjust to this new way.
Sources have told Rapoport that Gruden essentially has his own staff including Director of Football Research Dave Razzano that helps him judge talent and make decisions. In fact, Rapoport adds that Gruden had his own draft board and has his own pro board, separate from those used by others in the organization.
As for Gruden’s relationship with GM Reggie McKenzie, Rapoport reports that there’s no animosity between the two, but it’s still clear to many that Gruden is listening mostly to those in his circle.
While there has been talk of major changes coming to the Raiders’ front office next year, Rapoport mentions that there is nothing to back that up now and Gruden appears to be happy with the current setup.
The one aspect to watch is whether McKenzie seeks other options after turning down opportunities to interview for GM jobs last year.
We’ll have more regarding the Raiders as the news is available.
