According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, veteran QBย Matt Schaub could follow Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan to San Francisco and join the 49ers as theirย starter, backup or bridge to a future quarterback.
- Ian Rapoport reports that if Shanahan can’t get Kirk Cousins this offseason, he’s likely to target Patriots backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo and then Matt Schaub.
Cousins will be difficult to obtain, considering that the Redskins could use their franchise tag on him, which would force a team to part with two first-round picks on top of signing him to a massive contract. Beyond that, Washington has made it clear that they plan to retain Cousins either by the tag or by a long-term extension.
As for Garoppolo, he’s expected to be made available for trade this offseason, but there could be a lot of interest in him from teams in need of a quarterback such as the Browns and Bears. Some believe the Patriots will ask for at least a first-round pick for him while others have said a trade package could consist of mid-round picks.
Schaub is in line to be an unrestricted free agent in the next month, but it’s hard to say he would be a big upgrade to the 49ers’ current quarterback options. If the 49ers are serious about bringing him in, even as a backup, it could be an indication that they plan to completely start over at the position and move on from all of their current options.
We’ll have more regarding the 49ers as the news is available.
