Les Carpenter of the Washington Post reports the Redskins are not actively shopping OT Trent Williams.
This contradicts an earlier report that the Redskins had started trade discussions regarding Williams. Carpenter writes the team is hoping significant fines will prompt Williams to end his holdout and report back to camp.
Carpenter says Williams asked the team to trade him back in June, and when Washington refused he decided to ask for more money in an effort to jolt the team into action.
Williams did not report to Redskins training camp and there’s reportedly no end in sight to his holdout. Williams is unhappy with both his contract and the Redskins’ medical staff following a situation involving a growth on his scalp.
Washington reportedly told Williams to wait until after the season to have the growth removed. He later went to his personal doctor and it was determined that the growth was pre-cancerous. Williams has undergone multiple surgeries since to address the issue.
Williams requested either a trade or release earlier this offseason and has reportedly vowed not to play for Washington in 2019.
Williams, 30, is a former first-round pick of the Redskins back in 2010. He currently in the fourth year of his five-year, $66 million contract that includes $43.25 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $11 million and $12.5 million over the next two years of the agreement.
In 2018, Williams started 13 games for the Redskins. Pro Football Focus rated Williams as the No. 21 tackle out of 80 qualifying players.
We’ll have more on the situation with the Redskins and Williams as the news is available.
