According to Terry McCormick, an extension between the Titans and RB Derrick Henry is not imminent with a week to go before the deadline.
McCormick says Titans GM Jon Robinson and salary cap manager Vin Marino have continued negotiations with Henry’s representation, and there’s still time for things to come together before next Wednesday.
“Anytime you’re negotiating, whether you’re buying a house or a car or (signing) a player or whatever contracts, there’s got to be some back and forth with both sides,” Robinson said in an interview with Paul Kuharsky. “And you’ve got to kind of find where the player’s happy and where it makes sense for Club. So, you know, we’re still kind of working through that. And we’re down to, what, a week?”
Henry signed his franchise tender worth $10.2 million fully guaranteed for the 2020 season back in April, which eliminates any potential holdout.
The parties have until July 15 to negotiate a new contract or Henry will play out the season under the tag before the two sides take up negotiations again in 2021.
Henry, 26, is a former second-round pick of the Titans back in 2016. He finished the final year of his four-year, $5.407 million rookie contract and was set to be an unrestricted free agent.
In 2019, Henry appeared in 15 games for the Titans and rushed 303 times for 1,540 yards (5.1 YPC) and 16 touchdowns. He’s also added 18 receptions for 206 yards and two touchdowns.
We’ll have more on negotiations between Henry and the Titans as the news is available.
