According to Jason La Canfora, the Jaguars continue to be viewed as the “frontrunner” to hire former Ohio State HC Urban Meyer for their head-coaching vacancy.
However, league sources have told La Canfora that the Chargers remain a “strong possibility” for Meyer. While that may be the case, other sources who have spoken to La Canfora have downplayed the possibility of Los Angeles hiring Meyer and noted that it would be highly unlikely for the Spanos family to cede the kind of control and structure that Meyer would require to take the job.
As for the Jaguars, they’re reportedly been in contact with Meyer for weeks now and they have “significant” interest in him. La Canfora adds that there’s a strong sentiment in the coaching and GM community that the Jaguars hiring Meyer is an “eventuality” should he decide he’s healthy enough to return to coaching.
Even so, Jaguars’ sources have cautioned that Meyer remains one of the numerous candidates for their head-coaching job and they’re still in the early stages of the process.
Should Meyer be hired in Jacksonville, La Canfora’s sources have mentioned former Browns GM Ray Farmer as a potential GM candidate for the Jaguars. Another option could be Ohio State’s assistant athletic director Mark Pantoni.
