Latest Regarding Seahawks & Russell Wilson

Update:

Ian Rapoport reports that the Seahawks and Russell Wilson‘s agent, Mark Rodgers, are still “grinding away” on a potential contract extension that would make Wilson the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.

According to Rapoport, there’s a reason for optimism that a deal could get done, given that Rodgers is still in the building talking with the Seahawks.

Otherwise, Wilson is expected to play out the final year of his contract and then play under the franchise tag in back-to-back years.

Peter King doesn’t think Russell Wilson is content to simply surpass Aaron Rodgers as the highest-paid player in the NFL with his next contract.

Instead, King believes Wilson actually would be content playing out his current contract and then working under the franchise tag for the next two seasons rather than taking a typical quarterback extension. By going year-to-year, Wilson would still make $27.8 million over the next three years, as opposed to around $34 million over five or six years.

Sources close to the talks between Seattle and Wilson have told King that Wilson won’t sign a long-term deal with the Seahawks if it’s not done by tonight. In fact, King’s sources have said that Wilson and his agent have told GM John Schneider it has to be done now, or not at all.

Interestingly enough, King’s source has said that Wilson would likely want his contract to include devices that adjust future years of the deal based on how high the cap goes up year to year, or based on new revenue streams.

This would be a big deal for NFL contracts, as no player has been able to secure this kind of contract.

As for a possible trade, King doesn’t believe Wilson is pushing to be dealt right now to the Giants or any other team and he thinks Wilson wants to work out a deal with the Seahawks. Kings says Wilson wants to know where he stands with the Seahawks long-term, which is why he’s pushing to get a deal done now.

However, if the two parties are unable to reach an agreement tonight, King doesn’t think this is the Seahawks saying they don’t want Wilson long term and is instead related to their unwillingness to negotiate a contract that will set a new precedent.

Wilson, 30, is a former third-round pick of the Seahawks back in 2012. He’s entering the final year of his five-year, $89.142 million contract that included $60 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $17 million for the 2019 season.

Wilson will be an unrestricted free agent in 2020.

In 2018, Wilson appeared in all 16 games completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 3,448 yards, 35  touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also rushed for 376 yards.

We’ll have more regarding Wilson as the news is available.
