According to Ian Rapoport, the Lions are waiving veteran S Jayron Kearse.
Kearse has been a key role player and starter for Detroit this year so it appears Detroit is giving him a chance to land with a contender while the Lions evaluate younger options.
Kearse, 26, was drafted by the Vikings in the seventh round out of Clemson in 2017. He played out his four-year, $2.4 million rookie deal and made a base salary of $720,000 for the 2019 season.
The Lions signed Kearse to a one-year, $2.75 million deal this past March.
In 2020, Kearse appeared in 11 games for the Lions and recorded 59 total tackles, one forced fumble and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 68 safety out of 91 qualifying players.
