Lions Won’t Be Re-Signing K David Akers

Alex Marvez of Fox Sports reports that the Detroit Lions won’t re-sign veteran K David Akers this offseason.

Lions GM Martin Mayhew mentioned during the NFL Scouting Combine that they were not planning to bring Akers back next year, so this is really just a confirmation, per Tim Twentyman.

Detroit signed kickers John Potter and Giorgio Tavecchio to future/reserve deals back in January, so they will likely be given an opportunity to compete for the job in training camp.

Akers, 39, converted 19-of-24 field goals for the Lions this past season. He didn’t find much interest on the open market last year, so it’s doubtful things will be any different for him in the coming months.
