CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco writes that Texans DE/OLB Mario Williams will become the highest paid defensive end in the league if he becomes available.
Houston has said that they would like to keep Williams but using the franchise tag on him would cost them a staggering $22 million next season so that doesn’t seem like a reasonable option for them. On top of that, they’ve added some great young talent to their new 3-4 defense and Williams was forced to play OLB this season.
SI.com’s Don Banks lists the Bills, Jags, and Bucs as three teams that could make a run at Williams and even mentions the Packers as a wild card.
One thing worth noting is that NFL teams will be required to spend 89% of their cap space in 2012 so you can expect to see teams like the Bengals, Titans, Redskins, Chiefs and Buccaneers active during the offseason.
