Melvin Gordon Thinks Philip Rivers Signs With Colts

Chargers free agent RB Melvin Gordon said in an interview with CBS Sports last week that he thinks QB Philip Rivers will end up signing with the Colts. Although, Gordon did admit that he doesnโ€™t have any inside information on what Rivers will ultimately do.

โ€œI think he goes to the Colts,โ€ Gordon said. โ€œI donโ€™t know, thatโ€™s just my thought.โ€

Gordon explained that this move would reunite Rivers with Nick Sirianni, who is the Coltsโ€™ offensive coordinator.

โ€œHe has [connections],โ€ Gordon said.  โ€œNickโ€ฆ he came from here, we had him, and heโ€™s the offensive coordinator there. They run the same playbook, so itโ€™d be easy, he could come right in and he could be telling guys what to do, he knows whatโ€™s going on already.โ€

Beyond that, Rivers previously worked with Colts HC Frank Reich while they were together with the Chargers.

โ€œWe have history with [Reich] as well, so itโ€™d be an easy plug-in,โ€ Gordon said. โ€œSo I think thatโ€™s probably the best fit, but you never know. Tampa, I hear, is a place. I try not to talk to Phil about free agency, he has enough people in his ear about that. I think the Colts, though.โ€

This isnโ€™t the first weโ€™ve seen about Rivers to the Colts.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media mentioned recently that the โ€œmost logicalโ€ landing spot for Rivers appears to be the Indianapolis Colts.

As of now, the Colts havenโ€™t ruled anything out in regards to the quarterback position including adding a free agent to go along with Jacoby Brissett and/or looking to the draft for a long-term prospect.

A few weeks ago, the Chargers and Rivers mutually agreed to part ways.

Rivers, 38, is a former first-round pick of the Giants back in 2004. He was later traded to the Chargers in return for Eli Manning.

Rivers just finished the final year of his five-year, $99 million contract that includes $65 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $11 million for the 2019 season. He will be an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his NFL career.

In 2019, Rivers appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers and completed 66 percent of his passes for 4,615 yards, 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.

We have him included in our Top 100 โ€“ 2020 Free Agents list.
