Chargers free agent RB Melvin Gordon said in an interview with CBS Sports last week that he thinks QB Philip Rivers will end up signing with the Colts. Although, Gordon did admit that he doesn’t have any inside information on what Rivers will ultimately do.
“I think he goes to the Colts,” Gordon said. “I don’t know, that’s just my thought.”
Gordon explained that this move would reunite Rivers with Nick Sirianni, who is the Colts’ offensive coordinator.
“He has [connections],” Gordon said. “Nick… he came from here, we had him, and he’s the offensive coordinator there. They run the same playbook, so it’d be easy, he could come right in and he could be telling guys what to do, he knows what’s going on already.”
Beyond that, Rivers previously worked with Colts HC Frank Reich while they were together with the Chargers.
“We have history with [Reich] as well, so it’d be an easy plug-in,” Gordon said. “So I think that’s probably the best fit, but you never know. Tampa, I hear, is a place. I try not to talk to Phil about free agency, he has enough people in his ear about that. I think the Colts, though.”
This isn’t the first we’ve seen about Rivers to the Colts.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media mentioned recently that the “most logical” landing spot for Rivers appears to be the Indianapolis Colts.
As of now, the Colts haven’t ruled anything out in regards to the quarterback position including adding a free agent to go along with Jacoby Brissett and/or looking to the draft for a long-term prospect.
A few weeks ago, the Chargers and Rivers mutually agreed to part ways.
Rivers, 38, is a former first-round pick of the Giants back in 2004. He was later traded to the Chargers in return for Eli Manning.
Rivers just finished the final year of his five-year, $99 million contract that includes $65 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $11 million for the 2019 season. He will be an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his NFL career.
In 2019, Rivers appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers and completed 66 percent of his passes for 4,615 yards, 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.
We have him included in our Top 100 – 2020 Free Agents list.
