According to Aaron Wilson, new Cardinals WR DeAndre Hopkins is seeking a raise of $3-$4 million more per year in his new deal with Arizona.
Hopkins has three more years left on his current contract that was traded with him from Houston to Arizona. He will make base salaries of $12.5 million, $13.5 million and $13.915 million in 2020-2022.
His initial deal was worth about $16 million per year. The market for receivers has gone up since then, with Cowboys WR Amari Cooper and Falcons WR Julio Jones hitting or exceeding $20 million per year. This would move Hopkins’ compensation closer to that category.
The two sides plan to open extension talks at some point following the trade that sent Hopkins to Arizona in exchange for a second-round pick and RB David Johnson.
Hopkins, 27, was taken with the No. 27 overall pick back in 2013. He’s currently entering the third year of his five-year, $81 million extension that includes $49 million guaranteed.
In 2019, Hopkins appeared in 15 games for the Texans and caught 104 passes for 1,165 yards receiving and seven touchdowns. He also rushed for 18 yards.
We’ll have more on Hopkins as the news is available.
