NFC East Notes: Cowboys, Eagles, Giants

Cowboys

  • Last week, Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones mentioned that suspended LB Aldon Smith had met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell
  • However, Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News reports that Smith met Goodell at an event in New York. However, he has yet to formally met with Goodell about possible reinstatement. Watkins says the two still plan to meet.
  • ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler writes the Cowboys could be a strong fit for former Titans TE Delanie Walker who could offer depth and serve as a mentor to starting TE Blake Jarwin.
  • ESPN’s Matt Bowen adds Dallas makes sense as a home for free-agent LB Mark Barron as a nickel defender.
  • Cowboys DT Tyrone Crawford appeared in just four games last season and had surgeries on both his hips this offseason. However, he says he feels great and should be ready for the start of the season: โ€œObviously, double hip surgery is nothing to play around with. But Iโ€™m feeling awesome, ready to go.” (David Helman

Eagles

  • Zack Rosenblatt of NJ.com mentions that losing OT Halapoulivaati Vaitai as their third tackle is a blow to the offensive line, though if they bring back LT Jason Peters, Andre Dillard will likely fill that role with Lane Johnson starting at right tackle.
  • Rosenblatt believes the Eagles got a steal by drafting S K’Von Wallace in the fourth round, who has the ability to become a starter.
  • ESPN’s Matt Bowen mentions free-agent DT Mike Daniels as an option for the Eagles to continue building their interior defensive line rotation, particularly to stay fresh late in the season.
  • ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler writes free-agent LB Mark Barron could be a boost to the Eagles’ linebacking corps as a situational defender.

Giants

  • Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer mentions that Alabama HC Nick Saban, who is notoriously honest regarding former players, had more praise for Giants second-round S Xavier McKinney than he did for former Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa
  • NJ.com’s Matt Lombardo lists Paul Richardson, Taylor Gabriel and Chester Rogers as some available free-agent wide receivers who could bolster the Giants’ depth chart.
  • Both Richardson and Gabriel would offer speed and a veteran presence, while Rogers could also contribute on special teams as a gunner and punt returner.
  • ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler says the Giants are still one of the best remaining fits for LB Markus Golden, who New York placed an unrestricted free agent tender on.
