NFC East Notes: Eagles, Giants, Redskins

Eagles

Darren Rovell of ESPN reports that Eagles OL Chance Warmack is the first NFL player to collect on a loss-of-value policy.

Warmack took out an insurance policy that would allow him to collect if his second contract in the NFL was less than $20 million.

The Eagles wound up signing him to a one-year deal from the Eagles worth $1.5 million last year, which triggered a payout of around $3 million.

Giants

Giants owner John Mara compared first-round RB Saquon Barkley‘s popularity as a rookie to Hall of Fame LB Lawrence Taylor.

Possibly 1981, Lawrence Taylor, when he came to camp,” said Mara, via Zach Braziller of the New York Post. But maybe not quite as much [hype as Barkley]. His jersey is already the No. 1-selling jersey. He’s gotten a lot of attention.”

Mara went on to say that Barkley’s fame makes him “nervous” given the rookie has yet to play a down in the NFL.

I do get a little nervous about all the hype since he hasn’t played a down yet, but I think he’s capable of living up to it,” Mara said. “He’s very mature, beyond his years. We’re excited about him.”

  • Dan Duggan reports that new Giants OLB Connor Barwin‘s receives a two-year, $3.5M deal that includes a $1.27M base salary in 2018 of which $950K is guaranteed and a $730K signing bonus. In 2018, Barwin will carry a cap hit of $1.635M.
  • In 2019, Barwin has a base salary of $1.225M with a $250K roster bonus and a $25K workout bonus to go along with a cap hit of $1.865M.

Redskins

  • Redskins HC Jay Gruden announced Saturday that first-round DL Daron Payne will miss two to three weeks with an ankle injury. Payne reportedly had his left ankle stepped on in practice Friday and will be in a walking boot for a week. (John Keim)
  • Redskins WR Josh Doctson downplayed the MRI he underwent before training camp: “Nah, it was nothing…Just tuning things up, man. Every car gets an oil change so you’ve just got to change things.” (John Keim)
