NFC Notes: 49ers, Richard Sherman, Seahawks

49ers

  • According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, the 49ers could bring QB Trey Lance in as they did with QB Colin Kaepernick in 2012, using him to alert the defense to a potential quarterback run.
  • Barrows believes that rookie G Aaron Banks will compete for the starting right guard spot while G Laken Tomlinson remains on the left side with LT Trent Williams. Banks mentioned that he could start on either side of the line: “That won’t be a difficult switch. I’ve taken a ton of reps at right guard. Not as many as I’ve taken at left guard, but the switch from left to right, especially at guard, is not a problem at all.”
  • 49ers’ GM John Lynch mentioned that the team would have chosen Banks even if they had not traded back from pick No. 43. They also ended up drafting Ohio State RB Trey Sermon: “I think what happened at 43 — we had a lot of players that we still liked. Now, I don’t know if you guys will believe me or not, but had we stayed at 43, Aaron Banks was our choice. So to be able to move back five spots, pick up 121 that we later use to move up to get Trey Sermon was really an added bonus for us.”
  • As for any potential free agent signings, Barrows points out the team could bring in any of the following players as they did with TE Jordan Reed last season: WR Golden Tate, WR Danny Amendola, WR Tavon Austin, TE Delanie Walker, TE Trey Burton, TE Tyler Eifert, DE Melvin Ingram, DE Everson Griffen, DE Dion Jordan, DE Bruce Irvin, CB Richard Sherman, CB Brian Poole, CB Bashaud Breeland, or CB Darqueze Dennard.
  • When it comes to who will get the most reps at the No. 3 receiver spot, Barrows guesses that it could be WR Travis Benjamin.
  • Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee reports that veteran CB Richard Sherman has had preliminary conversations with the 49ers about rejoining the team in 2021, as well as with the Seahawks.
  • Although, Biderman adds that “a signing is not imminent, but discussions could accelerate in the coming weeks.”
