NFC Notes: Cardinals, Rams, Saints

Cardinals

An NFL executive who spoken with Matt Miller of B/R is skeptical about the Cardinals trading QB Josh Rosen

“Every team is filling their need at quarterback either through free agency or the draft,” the executive said. “Who is left to trade a high pick for Rosen?

Rams

New Rams LB Clay Matthews said he expects his position in the Rams’ defense to be “fluid.”

“Early in my career, I was predominately an edge rusher and have had success doing that,” Matthews said, via Pro Football Talk. “Then you saw, kind of in the middle of my career, switching to the inside because of necessity or whatever the reason was for. I thought I excelled at both positions. I thought when you allow me to play in space and you allow me to go play sideline-to-sideline and downhill, good things are going to happen. I expect it to be the same here. I expect my position to be fluid. I’ll have a variety of roles. I think the most important thing . . . is just pressing the quarterback, making him make bad decisions and keeping the heat and keeping the pressure on him.

  • Matthews said that as soon as it was clear that his time with the Packers was over, he wanted to come to the Rams. (Myles Simmons)
  • Field Yates reports that Matthews receives a two-year contract worth $9.25 million base value and includes $5.5 million guaranteed.
  • According to Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times, Rams LB Samson Ebukam underwent minor knee surgery this offseason.

Saints

  • According to Mike Triplett, the Saints and TE Jared Cook are “close” on a deal, but nothing has been finalized yet.
  • Cook himself is under the impression a deal is close, winking when asked if he was joining New Orleans and saying “maybe.” Cook then said “it’s going to be pretty awesome” catching passes from Drew Brees.  (Triplett)
