NFC Notes: Lions, Packers, Panthers

Lions

  • Albert Breer reports that Vikings’ assistant GM George Paton is a very strong candidate for the Lions due to the fact that Vikings GM Rick Spielman gave a good recommendation to his brother Chris Spielman, who serves as special assistant to the Lions’ ownership group.

Packers

Packers’ new DT Damon Harrison called his opportunity in Green Bay the “chance of a lifetime” and is focused on getting a “better understanding” of their playbook ahead of their Divisional Round game.

To me, it’s the chance of a lifetime,” said Harrison, via Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal. “I played in this defense my rookie year and somewhat my first two years, so a lot of it is just trying to reach back in my memory bank and bring it out, trying to get a better understanding of the playbook and ways that guys play. You’re learning that on the fly, so last week was a little tough. But it was alright.”

Harrison said he requested to be released by Seahawks GM John Schneider given that he wanted a better chance to play.

“I told him that I just wanted an opportunity to get out there on the field,” Harrison said. “The team was getting healthy. They’ve got some really good young guys that need the reps, and I just felt like I was making progress week after week, day by day. And I didn’t want to delay that progress by not playing. I just asked them if they could let me go to find another opportunity to play.

Harrison is also excited to play alongside and learn from Packers’ veteran QB Aaron Rodgers.

(When) you get a chance to see him work, you know something’s going to happen. You know ‘12’ has got something up his sleeve (to) something magical happen,” Harrison said. “To get a chance to be on that sideline and watching it rooting for him instead of hoping nothing bad happens, it was just amazing to see.”

Panthers

  • Vikings’ Assistant GM George Paton has withdrawn his name for the Panthers’ GM search, according to Jason La Canfora.
  • Joseph Person reports that the Panthers plan to interview two internal candidates for their vacant GM job this week, including Player Negotiations Director Samir Suleiman and Player Personnel Director Pat Stewart.
  • Person also reports that Panthers’ Assistant OL coach Marcus Satterfield will be the third offensive assistant to depart from the team this week, as he will join the South Carolina Gamecocks as offensive coordinator.
