NFC Notes: Mike McCarthy, Cowboys, Giants, Washington

Cowboys

  • A “plugged-in” source tells Adam Beasley of PFN that it could be “NFC Championship Game or bust” for Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy in year two.
  • According to Beasley, there’s a sense around the NFL that McCarthy didn’t “wear particularly well in his first year with the Cowboys” and his job could be in jeopardy, barring a deep playoff run.
  • One other concern is that Beasley says there are some around the Cowboys who are a “bit dubious” about McCarthy’s coaching staff decisions. Beasley explains that McCarthy is a delegator and clearly wanted people around him he could trust to handle a larger workload.

Giants

Giants’ second-year LB Cam Brown had great things to say about QB Daniel Jones and expressed his admiration for him during a recent podcast appearance.

“I fell in love with Daniel after the first week I hung out with him going through training camp last summer,” Brown said on The Matt Lombardo Show. “He’s just a different type of competitor. He’s ambitious. It’s almost [like a] sneaky-competitor. He’s a guy who’s very laid back; you’re going to sleep on him but he’s going to outrun you, he’s going to out-bench you, do whatever he needs to do to get better. But he’s going to do it in a silent manner to take care of business. I’m a big fan of Daniel Jones, and I’m happy he’s our quarterback.”

Washington

Washington RB Antonio Gibson said he wants to achieve 1,000 rushing yards this coming season after finishing with 795 last year.

“That was something I really wanted [last year],” Gibson said, via Zach Selby of the team’s official site. “This year, I’m priding myself on surpassing that.”

Gibson feels he can “show a lot of different things” with his running going forward.

“I should be able to show a lot of different things this year,” Gibson said.

Gibson called his rookie season a “learning process” and felt like he was “showing progress” throughout the year.

“Last year was a learning process for me,” Gibson said. “I got the hang of it as the season went on and I started showing progress.”

Washington RBs coach Randy Jordan mentioned that Gibson has shown a better understanding of their system and how to hit his running lanes.

“Those are little things that I see in his overall growth as a running back,” Jordan said. “Knowing schematically what we’re trying to do in the run game.”
