NFC Notes: Mykel Williams, 49ers, Rams Camp Buzz, Seahawks

49ers

49ers DC Robert Saleh said first-round DE Mykel Williams has great footwork, while adding that he still has a long way to go in order to reach his potential.

โ€œHeโ€™s got great feet,โ€ Saleh said, via NBC Sports Bay Area. โ€œHe’s kind of awkward because he’s long, he’s tall. He’s not a traditional three technique. He’s got great foot speed, strength, power, and length. Itโ€™s different for guards to go against a guy like him. He’s so good with his hands. He’s so good with his feet. He plays with great pad level, he’s got power. So, he’s a three-way player. He can run around you, he can run through you, he can counter, he’s showing all of it off.โ€

Williams has been used both from the edge and as a pass rusher from the inside.

โ€œItโ€™s hard to see in there, but his pass rush on the inside’s been fantastic,โ€ Saleh said.

Rams

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated provides his key takeaways from the Rams after attending their training camp:

  • Breer writes the excitement surrounding veteran WR Davante Adams is “palpable,” and the receiver appears “physically and mentally refreshed.”
  • Breer wonders if LT Alaric Jackson‘s issue with blood clots will “undermine” a loaded offense.
  • At tight end, Breer points out Colby Parkinson, Davis Allen and second-rounder Terrance Ferguson are competing for the No. 2 role behind Tyler Higbee.
  • Breer could see the Rams’ defensive front being “the best in football” with Jared Verse and Byron Young providing strength on the edge. Breer adds the team hopes to get DE Braden Fiske and DT Kobie Turner to attack more upfield.
  • Breer mentions that Los Angeles hopes the cornerback spot will be their most improved position with returners like Ahkello Witherspoon, Darious Williams, Cobie Durant and Emmanuel Forbes Jr.
  • Regarding Matthew Stafford dealing with an aggravated disc in his back, Breer’s understanding is that Los Angeles won’t push him until he’s fully recovered, and there doesn’t seem to be a long-term concern about the veteran quarterback.

Seahawks

The Seahawks’ offensive line struggled last season, allowing 54 sacks in total. Seattle OT Abraham Lucas said their offensive line is showing “purpose” to improve this offseason.

โ€œItโ€™s going to be different,โ€ Lucas said, via Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic. โ€œWeโ€™ve got to be different. Weโ€™ve got to be better. Weโ€™re our own hardest critics. People should hear what we say to each other in the film room and stuff. Thereโ€™s purpose this year, and thereโ€™s extreme effort to change. So, weโ€™re getting after it.โ€

Seahawks’ first-round OL Grey Zabel said he is learning that their offense wants to “run the damn ball” in 2025.

โ€œRun the damn ball,โ€ Zabel said. โ€œThatโ€™s what Iโ€™ve learned. Thatโ€™s what weโ€™re going to hang our hat on this year. It starts up front, then you have to be able to move the line of scrimmage and protect the guy behind us, whoโ€™s slinging the rock pretty well right now.โ€

Seahawks TE Eric Saubert said their offense is making adjustments to disrupt opponents’ edge rushers.

โ€œDefenses are all about containing the ball, but if you can stress defense on their edges and โ€ฆ get them to move and flow and create misdirection, you can set so many different things up in play-action,โ€ Saubert said. โ€œReceivers, theyโ€™re running to cut off a guy, and it looks just the same as certain routes weโ€™re running. Violent football โ€” if theyโ€™re worried about that, itโ€™s going to set up a lot of other things for our playmakers to make plays.โ€
