NFC West Notes: Cardinals, 49ers, Seahawks

Cardinals

  • Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman says that while the Cardinals have maintained they’re not trading CB Patrick Peterson, no one in the league believes them.
  • Freeman adds that most people believe if the right offer is made, the Cardinals would trade Peterson.
  • Cardinals WR Christian Kirk is expected to practice Wednesday and HC Kliff Kingsbury says the team will have a much better idea of his potential availability after that. (Bob McManaman)

49ers

Part of the reason the 49ers targeted WR Emmanuel Sanders in a trade from the Broncos was his familiarity with San Francisco’s offense. Sanders’ offensive coordinator in Denver, Rich Scangarello, was the quarterback coach in for the 49ers last year and instituted a similar offense for the Broncos. Midseason trades for receivers are often tough because of how much time is missed learning the playbook, but the common threads between San Francisco and Denver should ease Sanders’ transition.

โ€œI was just talking to Rich and he was just telling me it was pretty much the same offense โ€” different concepts but that Iโ€™ll be able to pick it up easy,โ€ Sanders said yesterday via CBS Denver’s Michael Spencer. โ€œIโ€™m waiting for (the 49ers) to call me right now and see when Iโ€™m going to get out there, get my physical and then get acclimated with the system.โ€

  • 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan expects Sanders to play this Sunday against the Panthers. (Matt Maiocco)
  • Shanahan added that WR Trent Taylor (foot) and third-round rookie WR Jalen Hurd (back) have had “a couple of setbacks” that have hurt their chances to return from injured reserve next month. (Matt Barrows)

Seahawks

  • John Boyle of the team’s official site believes Seahawks HC Pete Carroll would “strongly consider” hiring retired S Kam Chancellor as a coach given his “leadership ability and knowledge of the game.”
  • Regarding Seahawks’ second-round WR D.K. Metcalf‘s usage this season, Boyle projects Metcalf to finish with 45 receptions and 889 yards receiving.
  • Per Pro Football Talk’s Curtis Crabtree, Carroll said recently-acquired DB Quandre Diggs will play both safety spots for them: “He’s an explosive player. I’ve watched him for years be the kind of guy that throws his body around as well as you can do it. … He’s one of those guys I’ve seen for a long time and liked for a long time.”
  • Carroll added he was surprised Diggs was available and the timing was perfect for Seattle given recent injuries at safety: “We were looking and it happened to pop up just right.” (Adam Jude)
  • Seahawks TE Ed Dickson will practice next week and has a chance to play, per Carroll. (Crabtree)
