NFL News: Raiders Re-sign Stanford Routt

NFL Networks Jason La Canfora reports that Oakland Raiders have re-signed CB Stanford Routt to a three-year deal is worth $31.5 million which will include $20 million during the first two years.

While it’s not surprising to see them keep Routt, it is surprising to see them give him that kind of money when their the only team that’s bidding on him. Free agency isn’t even close to starting and yet the Raiders give him a high end deal. Oakland needs to learn how to negotiate because they continually make crazy financial decisions that don’t even equate to playoff appearances.

Despite the contract, Routt has been a serviceable cornerback for the Raiders and has great speed but he is in no way a shutdown corner. Interesting stat, Routt has only two interceptions during his last 47 games so there essentially paying top dollar for a guy to knock passes down.

The big winners, once again, are Johnathan Joseph and Nnamdi Asomugha who are heads above Routt in talent. Both will end up with huge contracts in comparison.
