NFL Notes: Alex Smith, Chiefs, 49ers, Eagles

Alex Smith

Veteran QB Alex Smith mentioned in an interview with Graham Bensinger that he expects to be playing elsewhere in 2018.

“For sure,” Smith said when asked if he felt like this would be his last season in Kansas City, via Pro Football Talk. “It absolutely does. Without a doubt.

The Chiefs traded up to get Patrick Mahomes in the first round of this year’s draft, so the clock is obviously ticking for Smith in K.C.

“It’s a tough pill to swallow,” Smith admitted. “It’s like, man, [we] could’ve added this or this or this position or this player.”

Smith also referred to his time with the 49ers as being “dysfunctional” and “unhealthy.

Just unhealthy, completely dysfunctional. Different people were on different wave lengths; not a clear goal of the entire building; very separated, and I think that all trickled into the locker room.”

49ers

49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said that FS Jimmie Ward (hamstring) is still “limited” but expects him to be more involved this week.

He’s still limited,” Shanahan said. “He’s going to get more today than he did last week. We’re going to continue trying to up his reps. We’ll see how that goes today. I expect him to be better this week than he was last week, but he’s definitely still limited. I hope to have him on Sunday.”

Eagles

  • Eagles CB Ronald Darby confirmed that he will return within his 4-6 week timetable of recovery for his dislocated ankle injury: “They were worried about me, but everyone’s happy that it wasn’t that serious, and I’m going to be back.” (Les Bowen)
