NFL Notes: Lamar Miller, Opt-Outs, Training Camp, Preseason

Lamar Miller

  • Free-agent RB Lamar Miller posted a video showing he has progressed to running and cutting as he works his way back from a torn ACL. Miller tore his ACL last year during the preseason in the final year of his contract with the Texans.

Opt-Outs

  • Andrew Brandt of Sports Illustrated writes that he is skeptical about the 2020 season amidst the global pandemic.
  • Although Brandt does not expect the NFL and NFLPA’s revenue negotiations to be as “contentious” as it was for Major League Baseball and their players, he anticipates the NFL’s owners will continue pushing for short-term alterations to salaries.
  • As for a possible opt-out clause for players, Brandt believes many would opt-out of the 2020 season if they are paid. However, he could only see a “handful” of players refusing to play next season if they don’t receive their salaries.
  • According to Brandt, many players have reached out to him asking if they are obligated to play.
  • Brandt gets the sense teams would only allow opt-outs with pay if players provide a โ€œdoctorโ€™s noteโ€ from a medical specialist and confirmation by the team doctor with details of risk factors.
  • However, Brandt writes that teams could dispute full-pay status and treat the player as having a non-football injury with the ability to pay between “zero and a full salary.”

Preseason

  • The NFL released its preseason game-day protocols and per NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, players will be prohibited from post-game contact inside of six feet and jersey swaps will be banned.
  • Coaches and players won’t be required to wear a mask on the sidelines, however, all other personnel will. (Ian Rapoport)

Training Camp

  • According to Pro Football Talk, the NFL and NFLPA have agreed to club facility protocols for training camp in 2020.
  • The protocols include a three-tiered designation for access to certain areas of the facility, with organizations required to submit designations for approval one week before players arrive.
  • It allows for up to two fan events at team stadiums for training camp practice as long as local requirements are followed in terms of the number of fans and as long as no contact with players is allowed.
  • Strict six-feet social distancing must also be enforced between everyone in the team facility at all times.
  • While players had asked for all meetings to be held virtually, the agreement only stipulates that “to the extent possible.” If in-person meetings are held, outdoors is preferable, and masking plus social distancing will be required.
