NFL Notes: Shane Ray, Draft, Buccaneers, Eagles, & Jets

Shane Ray

ESPN’s Bill Polian mentioned that he sees Robert Mathis when looking at Missouri DE/OLB Shane Ray.

When I see him I see Robert Mathis,” Polian said of Ray, via Pro Football Talk. “Near a Hall of Fame player. People who don’t like him are going to say he’s narrow of build and therefore can’t stand on the line of scrimmage, and that’s fine. I don’t want him to stand on the line of scrimmage, I want him to go chase the quarterback, and he’s about the best in this draft at doing that.”

“There is no long-term lingering issue with turf toe, not like a knee injury. You recover from it, you’re back, and you’re ready to go. I would not move him. I’d be praying that he’d come to me,” Polian said.

Draft

  • According to Ian Rapoport, opinions vary in regards to FSU DT Eddie Goldman, but he is reportedly generating buzz from 3-4 teams.
  • Aaron Wilson reports that Prairie View QB Jerry Lovelocke worked out for the Ravens, Redskins, and Texans.

Buccaneers

Buccaneers GM Jason Licht said that they’ve been contacted by teams about possibly trading up to No. 1 overall, but they’ve yet to receive any offers.

“It’s fair to assume someone is going to have to make a really good offer, yeah,” Licht said, via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. “And this time of year you get a lot of calls every day. Not making offers but just throwing, gauging your interest of if you would be open to it or not. And that will continue. But it would have to be an offer that makes this franchise, that sets this franchise even further ahead than what you thought you were going to with the decision you made.”

Eagles

Jason La Canfora writes that he can foresee a scenario where the Eagles trade QB Sam Bradford and their first-round pick to the Browns for their first-round picks, and then working out a deal with the Titans to move up to No. 2 overall for Oregon QB Marcus Mariota.

Others have suggested this as a possibility, but there are a lot of moving pieces here to go along with other teams likely interested in moving up for Mariota.

Jets

  • Jets GM Mike Maccagnan told reporters on Friday: “Philosophically, I’m not opposed to moving up in the draft… I would personally like to get more picks” (Manish Mehta)
