Earlier in the week rumors began to circulate that the Miami Dolphins have DeAngelo Williams sitting atop their offseason priority list. While that still may be the case, it’s worth noting that the Panthers have will have to allow Williams to leave before he is even able to test free agency.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter discussed this topic in a recent chat session.
“Don’t think Carolina will let him get away. Carolina always could slap its franchise tag on him, and it will not surprise me if it does,” writes Schefter.
Panthers new head coach has toย realizeย that he’s inheriting one of the leagues worst offenses and allowing, arguably, their best player to leave via free agency isn’t likely to help them come next season. Applying the franchise tag would give them a solid backfield without committing to a longterm deal with Williams.
