NFL Suspends Tom Brady Four Games, Patriots Lose Two Draft Picks

Update:

Patriots owner Robert Kraft has issued a statement accepting the league’s punishment for DeflateGate, but also expressing his disappointment with their decision.

โ€œDespite our conviction that there was no tampering with footballs, it was our intention to accept any discipline levied by the league. Todayโ€™s punishment, however, far exceeded any reasonable expectation. It was based completely on circumstantial rather than hard or conclusive evidence.

โ€œWe are humbled by the support the New England Patriots have received from our fans throughout the world. We recognize our fansโ€™ concerns regarding the NFLโ€™s penalties and share in their disappointment in how this one-sided investigation was handled, as well as the dismissal of the scientific evidence supported by the Ideal Gas Law in the final report.

โ€œTom Brady has our unconditional support. Our belief in him has not wavered.โ€

Tom Brady’s agent, Don Yee, has released a statement regarding the NFL’s decision to suspend his client four games.

According to Yee, Brady will appeal the league’s ruling.

โ€œThe discipline is ridiculous and has no legitimate basis. In my opinion, this outcome was pre-determined; there was no fairness in the Wells investigation whatsoever. There is no evidence that Tom directed footballs be set at pressures below the allowable limits. In fact, the evidence shows Tom clearly emphasized that footballs be set at pressures within the rules. Tom also cooperated with the investigation and answered every question presented to him. The Wells Report presents significant evidence, however, that the NFL lacks standards or protocols with respect to its handling of footballs prior to games; this is not the fault of Tom or the Patriots. The report also presents significant evidence the NFL participated with the Colts in some type of pre-AFC Championship Game planning regarding the footballs. This fact may raise serious questions about the integrity of the games we view on Sundays. We will appeal, and if the hearing officer is completely independent and neutral, I am very confident the Wells Report will be exposed as an incredibly frail exercise in fact-finding and logic. The NFL has a well-documented history of making poor disciplinary decisions that often are overturned when truly independent and neutral judges or arbitrators preside, and a former federal judge has found the commissioner has abused his discretion in the past, so this outcome does not surprise me. Sadly, todayโ€™s decision diminishes the NFL as it tells its fans, players and coaches that the games on the field donโ€™t count as much as the games played on Park Avenue.โ€

The NFL announced Monday that Patriots QB Tom Brady has beenย suspended without pay for the first four games of season. According to the officialย release, Brady was suspended forย “conduct detrimental to the integrity of the NFL.

The Patriots will receive aย $1 million fine and lose a first-round pick in 2016 and a fourth-round selection in 2017.

Patriots employees John Jastremski and James McNally have been indefinitely suspended without pay by theย team for their role in Deflategate.

With this suspension, Brady stands to loseย $2 million of his $8 million base salary for the 2015 season.

It’s worth mentioning that Brady can, and most likely will, appeal the four-game suspension from the league. An appeal could get his suspension down to two games, according to previous reports, but this is certainly disappointing news for the Patriots, who will most likely be without their best player for a few games.

Brady can participate in the Patriots’ย offseason workouts, training camp and preseason activities, including preseason games.

Here’s theย full NFL release:

The New England Patriots were notified today of the following discipline that has been imposed for violations of the NFL Policy on Integrity of the Game and Enforcement of Competitive Rules relating to the use of under-inflated footballs in the AFC Championship Game of this past season:

For the violation of the playing rules and the failure to cooperate in the subsequent investigation, the New England Patriots are fined $1 million and will forfeit the clubโ€™s first-round selection in the 2016 NFL Draft and the clubโ€™s fourth-round selection in the 2017 NFL Draft.ย  If the Patriots have more than one selection in either of these rounds, the earlier selection shall be forfeited.ย  The club may not trade or otherwise encumber these selections.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft advised Commissioner Roger Goodell last week that Patriots employees John Jastremski and James McNally have been indefinitely suspended without pay by the club, effective on May 6th. Neither of these individuals may be reinstated without the prior approval of NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent. If they are reinstated by the Patriots, Jastremski is prohibited from having any role in the preparation, supervision, or handling of footballs to be used in NFL games during the 2015 season. McNally is barred from serving as a locker room attendant for the game officials, or having any involvement with the preparation, supervision, or handling of footballs or any other equipment on game day.

Quarterback Tom Brady will be suspended without pay for the first four games of the 2015 regular season for conduct detrimental to the integrity of the NFL. Brady may participate in all off-season, training camp and pre-season activities, including pre-season games.

Commissioner Goodell authorized the discipline that was imposed by NFL Executive President Troy Vincent, pursuant to the commissionerโ€™s disciplinary authority under the NFL Constitution and Bylaws and the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the NFL Players Association.

โ€œWe reached these decisions after extensive discussion with Troy Vincent and many others,โ€ Commissioner Goodell said. โ€œWe relied on the critical importance of protecting the integrity of the game and the thoroughness and independence of the Wells report.โ€

Here’s Troy Vincent’s letter to Tom Brady:

โ€œWith respect to your particular involvement, the report established that there is substantial and credible evidence to conclude you were at least generally aware of the actions of the Patriotsโ€™ employees involved in the deflation of the footballs and that it was unlikely that their actions were done without your knowledge. Moreover, the report documents your failure to cooperate fully and candidly with the investigation, including by refusing to produce any relevant electronic evidence (emails, texts, etc.), despite being offered extraordinary safeguards by the investigators to protect unrelated personal information, and by providing testimony that the report concludes was not plausible and contradicted by other evidence.

โ€œYour actions as set forth in the report clearly constitute conduct detrimental to the integrity of and public confidence in the game of professional football. The integrity of the game is of paramount importance to everyone in our league, and requires unshakable commitment to fairness and compliance with the playing rules. Each player, no matter how accomplished and otherwise respected, has an obligation to comply with the rules and must be held accountable for his actions when those rules are violated and the publicโ€™s confidence in the game is called into question.โ€

The Patriots will play the Steelers (Week 1), Billsย (Week 2), Jaguarsย (Week 3), and Cowboysย (Week 4) to start the year.

There has been talk that the Patriots could add a quarterback in the coming days, but it appears as though New England will getย Jimmy Garoppolo prepared to be their starter was the regular season kicks off.

  1. I am sitting here watching Around the Horn…Kevin Blackstone, (female),Fagan, (female)MacMullan, Jones…All Brady lovers, they keep repeating the same thing over and over, how great Brady is, how unfair the NFL is treating him, what he means to the game…BS! Their opinions so scewed, so biased in favor of this NE qb, it’s sickening. None of them will even consider how and what deflating a football can do for anyone that handles the football. Would Brady still be so great if his receivers weren’t allowed to catch a football that feels more like a NERF ball in that wet cold weather? Would Brady be as accurate with his cold, wet weather passing if he wasn’t ALLOWED to ‘CHEAT’…Would a drop here or there, or a wobbly pass that Brady didn’t grip right, be intercepted more frequently? Would a running back have a ball or 2 slip when he was hit hard and tackled, Would any potential fumble or turnover maybe cause Brady to win 1, 2, 3 maybe 4 less Super Bowls all the way? WHO FREAKIN KNOWS? THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS CHEATED! Plain and simple…So quit with all the accalaids and all the Brady worship and let it soak in…If Brady is so, so, so, so GOOD, then WHY DID HE FEEL THAT HE NEEDED AN ADVANTAGE? Every QB in the league knows the rule! And contrary to what Mizz MacMullan said, Aaron Rogers said “I prefer the football to be a little over inflated” NOT “I over inflate the football” NO, Only THAT HE PREFERS, Rogers isn’t accused of CHEATING Mizz MacMullan…You Brady defenders work under the politics that is so popular, BRING OTHER’S DOWN TO JUSTIFY the one that YOU SUPPORT! You are all ENABLER’S!
I hope Brady appeals this decision and a full scale investigation ensues. Let’s do some checking into ‘why’ and ‘how’ the NE running backs never fumble! Let’s find out what they do differently then all other teams! After all they have LEAD ALL the NFL in ‘LEAST’ fumble category for 10 YEARS IN A ROW! Not by a narrow margin, indeed, by a HUGE MARGIN! Unheard of for an outside team that plays in the Northeast!
Their lucky ‘no fumble’ streak actually began in 2005 but let’s falsh back to 2001 where the Pat’s ‘LUCK’ seemed to change… Ahh, the ‘TUCK’ rule…We all remember that IDIOTIC NONSENSE don’t we? It began in that imfamous 2001 AFC Championship game, ain’t it funny how New England always seems to come up with the ‘breaks’ in the BIG games…This obvious fumble by Tommy was recovered by Oakland and would have sealed the victory, but wait a minute, lets ask the NFL commisioner to sit in on the REVIEW, THE commisioner happened to be sitting in the OWNER’S SUITE with The Pat’s owner Mr. Kraft. After some deep examination the Commisioner REVERSED the fumble and insisted that Tommy was trying to ‘tuck’ the ball when it came out of his delicate smallish hands…New England then kicked a field goal, after a tractor came out and cleared a spot for their kicker, and BOOM, Game over and Brady lead Pat’s to the Super Bowl! We have a new RULE in the NFL , the TUCK rule! when Tommy boy fumbled away New Englands chance of being in the Super Bowl in that allowed them to lead the whole NFL in FUMBLING THE LEAST OF ANY TEAM, including all DOMED and WARM WEATHER TEAMS by a HUGE margin for 10 CONSECUTIVE YEARS! While Brady’s NERF ball tosses gave him a tremendous advantage, especially in those routinely cold and wet weather games that he played in that rough and tumble New England climate. Allowing his receivers to make one handed grabs then secure the ball as did his running backs…did they fumble in any of their home games last year? Seriously, did they? Wow, they must be well coached! Let’s face it, taking 2 lbs out of the football allows easier center to QB exchanges, allows rb’s to secure the football much better, and of course makes catching a 50mph nerf ball much easier to catch. I am tired of all the ‘kiss ass’ Brady/Belicheat lovers saying that reducing the pressure in a footnball does nothing unusual! BS! Let them appeal by all means, but when they do, demand a deeper investigation! Let’s get some players, former players, coaches, ball attendants and put them under oath…then we’ll see how long this ‘silly’ under inflatation has been going on. I double dog dare ya…10 fricking years in a row! The runner in the ‘least’ fumble stat is not even close, hasn’t been close for 10 years in a row and NE plays 8 home games, outside in that cold, nasty weather, ith a qb that has small hands and demands his attentant’s to deflate footballs! Just saying, where there is smoke…
