Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that there is “no end in sight” for Trent Williams‘ holdout and it’s expected to be a “lengthy and complicated” absence.
According to Rapoport, there are a multitude of issues involved here including the fact that Williams did not like how the Redskins handled his medical scare.
Washington reportedly told Williams to wait until after the season to have a growth on his scalp taken care of. He later went to his personal doctor and it was determined that the growth was pre-cancerous and he has since undergone a few surgeries.
Beyond that, Williams’ contract is another situation that likely will need to be addressed. Rapoport says that the situation has “not changed at all” and until it does, Williams is unlikely to be with the team.
The Redskins announced Saturday that they’ve officially placed Williams on the reserve/did not report list and signed OT Corey Robinson.
Williams requested either a trade or release earlier this offseason and has reportedly vowed not to play for Washington in 2019.
Williams, 30, is a former first-round pick of the Redskins back in 2010. He currently in the fourth year of his five-year, $66 million contract that includes $43.25 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $11 million and $12.5 million over the next two years of the agreement.
In 2018, Williams started 13 games for the Redskins. Pro Football Focus rated Williams as the No. 21 tackle out of 80 qualifying players.
We’ll have more on the situation with the Redskins and Williams as the news is available.
