Oklahoma HC Lincoln Riley tells Peter King that he wasn’t at all tempted to pursue an NFL coaching job this offseason and could see himself being a “college lifer.”
โI certainly wasnโt tempted at all this year. I would say right now it wouldnโt surprise me at all if I am a college lifer,” Riley said. “I think itโll be interesting how a lot of things go on from here โฆ if thereโs a lot of changes in both games. Football is evolving; thereโs a lot of changes obviously at the NFL level right now. Thereโs a lot of changes with all the transfers and recruiting and all the different things going on at the college level. You never know how those games are going to evolve. I mightโve been tempted honestly had I not been at a place like Oklahoma. But this is one of the best jobs there is in football. Like Iโve said before, Iโll never say never. I never want to promise things that I canโt 1,000 percent guarantee. Itโs not something that really tempts me at all right now.โ
Riley was widely expected to be one of the most popular names to watch for head-coaching jobs in the NFL this offseason and considered to be one top up-and-coming coaches in football.
However, indications were that he was going to return to Oklahoma for the 2019 season and the two parties eventually agreed on a new contract extension.
Although, it’s unlikely his new extension will prevent NFL teams from calling Riley in the hope of convincing him to join the NFL ranks in the coming years.
During his two years as the Sooner’s head coach, Riley has led the team to a record of 24-4 (85.7 percent) and two bowl game appearances.
