Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel writes that there’s a good chance the Green Bay Packers will meet with Clay Matthews‘ representation at the Combine to discuss a long-term deal.
Matthews, 26, is in the final year of his rookie contract and will make a $3.73 million after triggering escalators in contract that raised his salary from $1.492 million.
According to Silverstein, Matthews could target similar contracts to ones signed by DeMarcus Ware, LaMarr Woodley and Robert Mathis. Those contracts range from $8 million to $11 million annually and include up to $29.5 million guaranteed.
The Packers could always allow Matthews to play out the final year of his contract with intention of using the franchise tag on him in 2014, which would run them close to $9 million. However, it seems more likely that they’ll try to lock him up now that they have some cap space to work with.
