Pete Dougherty of theย Green Bay Press-Gazetteย writes that the Packers could end up tripling their cap space in the next few weeks as GM Ted Thompson decides what to do with some of their veteran players.
Dougherty writes that there’s actually a chance that the Packers may elect to part ways with S Charles Woodson, which in turn would create $10 million cap space.ย On top of that, Green Bay could save an additionย $5.45 million in cap space by releasing ILB A.J. Hawk.
These moves would addย $15.45 million to theย $7 million that they can carryover from last year. Jeff Saturday‘sย retirement frees up anotherย $3.75 million, so you can see that they could be in great shape financially just by making a few ย moves.
There’s been a lot of talk regarding contract extension for their core players like Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews and B.J. Raji, so this would allow them to be aggressive in this regard.
John Clayton ofย ESPN.comย mentions that thatย Steven Jackson would be aย “perfect” for the Packers’ offense and believes they could sign him for $5 million annually.
Clayton admits that the Rams are opening to keeping Jackson, despite the fact that he could void his current deal at some point in the next few weeks.
The Packers have longย coveted Jackson and could clearly use a legitimate No. 1 running back. Jackson, 29, is getting up there in terms of mileage and age, for a running back, but he hasn’t show signs of any major decline in his overall ability.
Green Bay isn’t known for making a splash in free agency, but it really comes down to value for them, so there’s at least a chance they could be in on Jackson come March.
