Pro Football Talk is reporting that the Packers signed LT David Bakhtiari to a new four-year extension just before midnight Saturday night.
According to PFT, Bakhtiari’s deal has new-money value of $23 million per year, making him the highest-paid offensive lineman in league history.
Ian Rapoport confirms the news and adds that it’s a four-year extension worth up to $105.5 million in new money. The contract includes a $30M signing bonus and another $30 million-plus available in March roster bonuses within the next 28 months.
Rapoport says the “practical” guarantee is at least $62.8 million before the end of the 2022 season.
The parties had said that they wanted to get a long-term extension before next year and it appears as though they were able to hammer out the details to ensure Bakhtiari remains in Green Bay long-term.
The Packers likely would have franchised Bakhtiari next year had they not got an extension done. This now opens up the possibility for them to use the tag on another free agent such as RB Aaron Jones.
Bakhtiari, 29, is a former fourth-round pick of the Packers back in 2013. He’s currently in the final year of his five-year, $53.34 million contract that included $16 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $10 million for the 2020 season.
Bakhtiari was in line to be an unrestricted free agent in 2020.
In 2020, Bakhtiari appeared in six games for the Packers, making six starts for them at left tackle.
We have him included in our Top 50 – 2021 Free Agents list.
