Former Carolina Panthers G Travelle Wharton says that he is “leaning towards” retirement, but that no decision has been made yet, per Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer.
Wharton, 32, is coming off of a great 2013 season in which Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 5 guard in the league.
Interestingly enough, the Panthers actually released him back in 2012, but Wharton returned to Carolina last year when he signed a one-year contract. He has spent all nine seasons with the Panthers.
The lack of substantial interest in Wharton has been fairly surprising considering his performance last season. Wharton’s age may be scaring off some teams, but if he is willing to accept a short term deal, he could catch on with a team before the season starts.
