Panthers Have Interviewed Mike McCarthy For HC Job Twice

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Panthers have actually interviewed former Packers HC Mike McCarthy two times for their head-coaching vacancy and “he did very well.”

Even so, Rapoport says Carolina intends to interview Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, Baylor HC Matt Rhule and Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy could also get a look.

Rapoport adds that GM Marty Hurney is heavily involved in the interview process, which further indicates he’ll likely be back with the team.

McCarthy has made it clear that he’s looking to get back into the NFL after sitting out the 2019 season.

Panthers owner David Tepper previously indicated that he’s interested in hiring an offensive-minded coach and McCarthy has prior expiring as a program builder from his time in Green Bay.

McCarthy, 55, began his NFL coaching career with the Chiefs back in 1993 as an offensive quality control coordinator. He bounced around with the Packers, Saints and 49ers before the Packers hired him as their head coach in 2006.

The Packers made the decision to move on from McCarthy following their disappointing loss to the Cardinals in Week 13 of last year.

During his 13-year tenure in Green Bay, McCarthy has led the Packers to a record of 125-77-2 (61.8 percent), which includes nine playoff appearances and a Super Bowl title in 2010.

We’ll have more regarding the Panthers’ head-coaching search as the news is available.
