Panthers Sign TE Scott Simonson, Waive DE Lavar Edwards

The Carolina Panthers announced Tuesday that they’ve signed TE Scott Simonson to a contract and placed DE Lavar Edwards on waivers.

Simonson, 23, originally signed on with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent out of Assumption College back May of last year. He was unable to make Oakland’s final 53-man roster coming out of the preseason, but later signed on to the team’s practice squad.

The Raiders elected to place him on waivers back in June but he later caught on with the Panthers. Simonson wasn’t able to secure a spot on their active roster but was signed to their practice squad the start of the season. Carolina waived him last week.

In 2016, Simonson appeared in five games for the Panthers but has yet to record a statistic.

Edwards, 26, is a former fifth-round pick of the Titans back in 2013. He was traded to the Cowboys a year later and would go on to spend just over a year in Dallas.
Since then, Edwards bounced around a bit, playing for the Raiders, Bears, Cowboys and Bills before he was claimed off of waivers by the Panthers at the start of the season.

In 2016, Edwards has appeared in five games and recorded seven tackles, one sack and a pass defense.
