Carolina gave Charlton the standard three-year deal for undrafted rookies. He’s the second punter on the roster in addition to Michael Palardy.
Charlton likely provides a camp leg to give Palardy some rest as the incumbent, but could also provide some competition. Palardy is under contract through 2021 and averaged 46 yards per punt on 75 kicks in 2019, which ranked 13th in the NFL.
Charlton, 23, played his college ball at South Carolina. He’s the school’s all-time leader in punting average at 45.5 yards and averaged 47.7 yards per punt as a senior.
