Patriots Pick Up CB Jason McCourty’s Option

ESPN’s Field Yates reports the Patriots have picked up CB Jason McCourty‘s team option for the 2020 season.

McCourty will have a cap figure close to $5.5 million next season, which is a considerable bargain for a starting cornerback.

McCourty, 32, is a former sixth-round pick of the Titans back in 2009. He spent eight years of his career with Tennessee and was in the final year of his six-year, $44.26 million contract when the Titans elected to release him.

The Browns quickly signed McCourty to a two-year, $6 million contract that included $2 million guaranteed. He was set to make a base salary of $625,000 for the 2018 season.

The Browns traded McCourty to the Patriots during the 2018 offseason in exchange for a sixth-round pick. He re-signed in New England on a two-year deal in 2019.

In 2019, McCourty played in 12 games for the Patriots, recording 39 total tackles, one interception and six pass defenses.  He was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 17 cornerback out of 113 qualifying players.
