Jim McBride reports that the Patriots are placing K Stephen Gostkowski on injured reserve Wednesday.
According to Adam Schefter, Gostkowski has a left hip injury that will require season-ending surgery. He is, however, expected to be ready to return for the 2020 season.
This explains why the Patriots are bringing free agent kickers for tryouts on Wednesday.
Gostkowski, 35, is a former fourth-round pick of the Patriots back in 2006. He’s played his entire 13-year career in New England and finished out his four-year, $17.2 million contract before agreeing to a two-year deal worth $8.5 million this offseason.
In 2019, Gostkowski has appeared in four games for the Patriots and converted 7 of 8 field goal attempts (87.5 percent) to go along with 11 of 15 extra point tries (73.3 percent).
