Adam Caplan reports that the New England Patriots have released QB Brian Hoyer.
This is somewhat of a surprising move, but it’s also a clear indication that they’re ready to move forward with Ryan Mallett as Tom Brady‘s backup. There was some speculation awhile back that the Patriots could look to trade either Hoyer or Mallett depending on how things went during training camp, but apparently that wasn’t as feasible as some believed.
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network tweets that the Patriots did in fact try to trade him.
