Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that the Raiders have investigated potential contingency options including playing games in Salt Lake City, Phoenix and San Diego, depending on whether their brand new stadium in Las Vegas is done on time for the 2020 season.
Bonsignore says the Raiders explored these three cities before signing their final lease with the Oakland Coliseum last offseason and he thinks it’s “realistic” that all three of these options could be resurrected if need be.
However, a source close to the situation has told him the Raiders would only go this route in an “absolute worst-case scenario.”
If the Raiders end up needing a few weeks, Bonsignore mentions that they could use the preseason and the early part of the regular season to buy them some time to have Allegiant Stadium completed.
As of now, Allegiant Stadium is still on track to host two preseason games and the roof is scheduled to be completed within two weeks. From there, construction crews will begin to work on the interior of the facility.
It’s possible COVID-19 could force further delays, but Bonsignore writes that the Raiders could opt to play all four preseason games on the road if need be. The NFL has yet to release the 2020 schedule, so they could have the Raiders open the season on the road for the first few weeks in order to ensure that they have adequate time to get the building completed.
Weโll have more regarding the Raiders as the news is available.
