Raiders “Kicking The Tires” On Possible Trade For Lions CB Darius Slay

League sources tell Vic Tafur of The Athletic that the Raiders are “kicking the tires” on a possible trade for Lions CB Darius Slay.

The Raiders have clearly been in the market for an impact cornerback. Tafur says the Raiders really wanted to sign Byron Jones before he agreed to a record contract with the Dolphins and they were reportedly one of the teams in the mix for Chris Harris Jr before he agreed to a two-year deal with the Chargers.

Earlier in the day, the Lions signed former Falcons CB Desmond Trufant to a contract on Wednesday and Slay commented on Twitter that he’s hoping this “speeds up my trade process.”

Tafur mentions that the Lions are believed to be looking for a second-round pick in return for Slay, but the Raiders are currently without one. Tafur notes that the Raiders do have two first-round picks, three third-round selections and starting G Gabe Jackson as notable trade assets.

It’s worth mentioning that Slay is looking for an extension as part of any trade, so a would need to be willing to give him a pay raise to complete a deal with the Lions.

Slay, 29, is a former second-round pick of the Lions back in 2013. He played out his rookie contract before agreeing to a four-year, $50.2 million extension that included $23 million fully guaranteed.

Slay stands to make a base salary of $10 million for the 2020 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Slay would free up $10.5 million of available cap space while creating $2.9 million in dead money.

In 2019, Slay appeared in 14 games for the Lions and recorded 46 tackles, two interceptions, a fumble recovery and 13 pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 84 cornerback out of 114 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Slay and the Lions as the news is available.
