Raiders Release LB Tahir Whitehead

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the Raiders are releasing LB Tahir Whitehead on Monday.

The Raiders have already announced the move.

The writing was on the wall for Whitehead after his starting role reduced in favor of Will Compton last season.

Whitehead, 29, is a former fifth-round pick of the Lions back in 2012. He has played out his rookie contract before agreeing to a two-year deal worth more than $8M with Detroit back in 2016.

The Raiders signed Whitehead to a three year, $19 million in 2018. He was set to make a base salary of $5,950,000 for the 2020 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Whitehead will free up $6.25 million of available cap space while creating $1,041,668 in dead money.

In 2019, Whitehead appeared in all 16 games for the Raiders and recorded 108 tackles, no sacks or interceptions and a pass defense. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 59 linebacker out of 89 qualifying players.
