According to Ian Rapoport, the Ravens have agreed to a three-year extension with DC Don Martindale.
Per Jason La Canfora, the deal averages $3.25 million per year, which makes Martindale among the NFL’s highest-compensated defensive coordinators.
Martindale interviewed with the Giants for their head coaching vacancy this year and is expected to draw interest as a head coach again in 2021.
Along with the extension for OC Greg Roman, the Ravens have made it a clear priority to reward both their top assistant coaches who were critical to their success in 2019.
Martindale, 56, began his coaching career in 1986 as the defensive coordinator at Defiance. He later took his first NFL coaching job with the Raiders in 2004.
After a few years with the Broncos, Martindale joined the Ravens as their linebackers coach and was eventually promoted to defensive coordinator in 2018.
In 2019, the Ravens’ defense ranked No. 4 best in yards allowed, No. 3 in points allowed, No. 5 in rushing yards allowed and No. 6 in passing yards allowed.
