Redskins Promote Kevin O’Connell To OC, Bringing Back Jim Tomsula As DL Coach

The Washington Redskins announced Tuesday that they’ve promoted passing game coordinator Kevin O’Connell to offensive coordinator and named Matt Cavanaugh a senior offensive assistant.

The Redskins also announced that DL coach Jim Tomsula will be returning for his third season.

O’Connell, 33, is a former third-round pick of the Patriots back in 2008. After five years in the NFL, O’Connell was hired by the Browns as their quarterbacks coach in 2015.

O’Connell spent one year with the 49ers before the Redskins hired him as their quarterbacks coach in 2017. He was promoted to passing game coordinator last year.

Tomsula, 50, began his NFL coaching career with the 49ers as their defensive line coach back in 2007. He stayed in this position for several years before he took over for Jim Harbaugh after he was fired in 2015.

The Redskins hired Tomsula as their DL coach in 2017.

Tomsula’s record with the 49ers is 6-11 (35.3 percent), which includes one game he filled in as the team’s interim head coach during the 2010 season.
