Report: Cowboys Open To Trading Anthony Spencer

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Networkย reports that althoughย the Dallas Cowboys would like to have Anthony Spencer on their roster next season, they’re reportedly willing to trade him given the limited number of pass rushers in this year’s free agent market.

This is interesting considering that the Cowboys just used their franchise tag on Spencer just yesterday.ย The move was somewhat curious as Dallas currently has limited cap space to work with and are moving to a 4-3 base defense next year.

Clearly, Spencer could play defensive end for them, but his value is much higher as 3-4 outside linebacker. The Cowboys could have found a replacement at a reasonable cost versus committing a guaranteed salary ofย $10.6 million to him for the 2013 season.

It will be interesting to see if anything comes of this next few weeks.
